Gahanga is a populated locality located in Kigali City with an estimate terrain elevation above sea level of 1,492 meters (Latitude: -2°2’10.68″ and
Longitude: 30°5’22.56″).

The population density due to Kigali City expansion is considered as a major threat to the Nyabarongo river considered as source of Nile. It is known that population is an important source of development, but it is at the same time a major source of environmental degradation when it exceeds the threshold limits of the support systems.

Population impacts on the environment by primarily using natural resources and production of wastes and is associated with environmental stresses like loss of biodiversity, air and water pollution and increased pressure on arable land using poor farming practices.

The above picture shows that the color of the Nyabarongo river passing not only in other many Sectors across the Country but also through Gahanga Sector. GAHANGA is a chosen area in the City of KIGALI to be the key starting point in a clean a healthy City where NBC operates its activities and will make awareness. The mention picture again is a sign of environmental degradation of the Nyabarongo watershed.

The fact that Nyabarongo is the real source of the Nile protecting it is to protect Akagera river hence protecting Nile river.
